Schnauz is also known as Knack, Wutz, Bull and Hosn Obi. A maximum of 6 players can compete against each other using a deck of 32 French cards. At the start of the game, each player has 3 lives and is issued 3 cards.
The dealer can either keep his cards or swap them out. If the dealer decides to keep his cards, the 3 remaining cards are laid out face-up in a pool on the table. The player left of the dealer starts the round by either;
- swapping one of the cards in his hand for one in the pool,
- swapping his entire hand for all 3 cards in the pool,
- doing nothing at all ('pass'), or
- 'knocking' - signalling the end of the round.
The aim of the game is to form the best card combination in your hand and thus achieve the highest point score. Players can end a game by 'knocking'. Once a player has knocked, the other players are allowed to swap cards with those on the table one last time before the game ends.
The game can also be brought to an immediate end as soon as a player has 3 Aces in their hand (called 'Fire') or holds 31 points in their hand (called 'Schnauz').
