Hong Kong Mahjong is an ancient and very popular board game from China. The game is played with 144 stones (Bamboo, Characters, Lotus, Winds, Flowers, Seasons and Dragons) by 3 to 4 players in direct competition. At the start of the game each player is assigned a wind direction (East, South, West, North) and receives 13 stones.
The player who is assigned the East Wind receives 14 stones and may start the game. The players take turns in receiving an additional stone and combining sequences (Chow, Pong, Kong, Pair). If a player discards a stone with which you could form a sequence, you may take the stone and use it. At the end of every move the players must discard one stone. If you draw a Season or a Flower, this stone must be laid immediately and you’ll receive a replacement stone.
The game is over as soon as a player has laid 4 sequences and a Pair. This hand is called “Mahjong”.
